It is no coincidence that for years Barcelona has been facing serious financial problems that prevent them from signing top level players and competing with the best teams in Europe. For years the club's chiefs made bad decisions, spending a lot of money on players who did not perform as expected.
The most important cases are those of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé. Both arrived in 2017 to replace Neymar, who was bought that summer by Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million. The Blaugranas spent more money on the signing of these two players than they received for the Brazilian forward. However, their level did not meet expectations and the club lost a lot of money.
Something similar happened with Sergiño Dest. The American right-back arrived at Barcelona in 2020 in exchange for $22 million, after excelling at Ajax. But his performances were not good and two seasons later he was loaned to AC Milan. There he did not stand out either and played just 14 games.
He has now returned to Barcelona and was part of the squad that traveled to the United States to play a series of friendly matches. However, coach Xavi Hernández does not consider him a priority. In fact, he has requested the signing of another player in that position. Los Culés' desire is to sell Dest, but so far no convincing bids have come in.
Barcelona are worried because not many offers have come in to sign the player. The most possible options are from Major League Soccer, but Dest has no intention of playing in the United States for now. His priority is to continue in Europe, although so far no top club has shown interest in signing him.
