Manchester United failed in the Champions League. They had qualified to the most important tournament in Europe thanks to their good performances during the previous season, in which they finished third in the Premier League standings. Therefore, the fans' hopes were high, trusting that the team's level would be even better now.

But none of that happened. Not only did the Red Devils not improve, but they got noticeably worse compared to the previous season, and that cost them dearly. In Champions League Group A they could only win one match out of the six they played (against Copenhagen at Old Trafford), drew another (in Turkey against Galatasaray) and lost the remaining four.

This not only prevented them from advancing to the round of 16 of the tournament, but it was not even enough for them to play in the UEFA Europa League. Now they will have to make do with the Premier League, where they are in sixth place and far behind leaders Liverpool, and the FA Cup, in which they have not yet started to participate.

The team's poor performance has caused criticism of the players, but mainly of the coach. Many believe that Erik Ten Hag made serious mistakes during the transfer window, by letting go important players such as David De Gea, and by requesting the hiring of others who did not live up to expectations, such as Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. In addition, he has been criticized for the strategies implemented in some matches.

What will happen to him?

In the near future Sir Jim Ratcliffe will buy 25% of Manchester United for more than $1.3 billion and take over soccer-related decisions. In that case, if he decides to fire Ten Hag, he has apparently already chosen his replacement. According to The Sun, the club's future owner has met with Graham Potter, former Brighton and Chelsea coach.
