The Copa America is the oldest national team competition in the world, among those still being played today. Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil have dominated the tournament for decades and are always the favorites to win the title, but other countries such as Colombia, Chile and Ecuador are ready to compete with them as well.

This summer the championship will be played once again, but it will have a special feature: it will not be in South America, as it usually is, but in the United States. It will be the second time in history that this happens, after the 2016 Copa America Centenario. And that will not be the only innovative detail. The tournament will feature, in addition to the ten South American teams, six CONCACAF guests: the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, Panama and the winners of the two playoffs, Canada vs Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras vs Costa Rica.

This is a cause for celebration for North American fans, who will be able to see soccer's top stars such as Lionel Messi, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, Lautaro Martinez, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez up close. But apparently not everyone agrees that this is good news.

Sergiño Dest, right-back of the U.S. National Team, surprised everyone with harsh sentences against the organization of the tournament. "I would have loved to have had the Copa America in South America," he began. And then he added: "In my opinion, the future is the most important thing, above money and all that, so I'm a little disappointed that it's not in one of those South American nations. That's where it started and that's where it should be. It's like playing the European Championship in Africa. It doesn't make sense to me. But nowadays everything is about money".

How far can they go?

One of the best performances of the United States in a Copa America was precisely when they were the hosts in 2016. At that time they reached the semifinals after eliminating Ecuador in the quarterfinals, but eventually lost 4-0 to Argentina. They had reached the same stage 21 years earlier, in Uruguay. Now, with a generation of very talented young players, they will do their best to compete with the best teams in South America.
