The English national team played its last match in 2023. On the last day of Group C of the Euro 2024 qualifiers, they visited the Toše Proeski Arena stadium in the city of Skopje to face North Macedonia. The match was no more than a mere formality, as the result could not change the fate of either team: the hosts no longer have a chance to qualify for the tournament to be played next summer in Germany, while the visitors have already secured their place there.
That is why coach Gareth Southgate rested some of the stars of the squad, such as Harry Kane, who was substituted. In his place played Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. But things did not go as expected during the first half and The Three Lions went into the break trailing 1-0 through Enis Bardhi's goal.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, the England manager made the change everyone expected and brought on Harry Kane. And things changed instantly, as at that moment Phil Foden kicked a corner kick, the Bayern Munich striker jumped to dispute the ball with an opposing player and ended up becoming the equaliser.
Harry celebrated the goal with his teammates as if it had been his own and even the official TV broadcast announced it as such. But after several replays of the goal, the decision was changed for an important reason: Kane never touched the ball, but it was defender Jani Atanasov who deflected it and scored an own goal.
Harry Kane had a good reason to try to keep the goal on the stat sheet. He is competing to become the world's top scorer in 2023. For now he shares the top spot with Erling Haaland, both with 48 goals on the year, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé have 46.
