Luis Diaz has been in the news in recent weeks for a sad reason. His father, Luis Manuel Diaz Jimenez, was kidnapped by ELN guerrillas while driving on a road in Colombia. After several days without news about him, he was finally released safe and sound and was reunited with his family.

While all this was going on, the winger decided to continue playing for Liverpool and scored the equaliser in the last minute against Luton Town. There he received affection even from rival players and fans, as well as from his own teammates. And now he traveled to South America to join the Colombian national team for the international break in November.

The first of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches was this Thursday against Brazil in Barranquilla. There, the visitors started better, as 4 minutes into the first half Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener. But after the break Luis Diaz changed everything with two headers in a few minutes and secured Colombia's victory.

After the second goal, 34 minutes into the second half, the TV cameras captured the reaction of Luis Manuel, Diaz's dad, who was in the stands of the stadium. He was seen very emotional, with tears in his eyes and being held by the fans around him. No doubt it was a very special moment for him after the horrible time he went through recently.

Now they can't relax

With the win against Brazil, Colombia have 9 points in the standings and are in third place, 3 points behind leaders Argentina. Next Tuesday they will play their last game of the year, against Paraguay, and it will be a great opportunity for them. If they get another win, they will get closer to the goal of qualifying for the next World Cup.
