Chelsea had not had a good start to the season, having drawn 1-1 against Liverpool in the opener at Stamford Bridge and lost 3-1 in the London derby against West Ham United. That's why Friday's game was crucial for them, as they needed a win against Luton Town to end the negative run: they had barely won one game out of the last 13 in the Premier League.
And not only did they meet the target, but they did it by showing a great level and provoking the joy of the fans. It was 3-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling, twice, and Nicolas Jackson, who netted for the first time with the blue jersey.
The opener came 17 minutes into the first half, when The Blues created a great collective play with passes between Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Conor Gallagher and Malo Gusto, who assisted Sterling. The English winger got into the box, dribbled past three opponents and scored with a left-footed shot.
The second goal came 23 minutes into the second half, when again Gusto set up Sterling, who only needed a gentle touch to score again. And 7 minutes later Raheem Sterling did what he does best: he sent in a great drilled cross from the right that was tapped in by Nicolas Jackson to make it 3-0.
Raheem Sterling was the star of the match. The English winger was involved in all 3 goals: he scored the first two and assisted Jackson for the third. But above all he drew attention for the great individual play he did in the first of them, when he dribbled three opponents inside the box. Many Chelsea fans on social media assured that the play reminded them of a club legend, Eden Hazard, who shone on the London side between 2012 and 2019.
