In an emotional farewell ceremony held at the Giuseppe Meazza, Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced on Sunday that he is retiring from football. Standing at the center of San Siro, the Swedish forward expressed his gratitude towards AC Milan and its fans, stating that he will remain a lifelong supporter of the club.
"The time has come to say goodbye to football, but not to you. You have welcomed me with open arms, and I will be a Milanista for the rest of my life," said Ibrahimovic, addressing the fans and fellow teammates present at the ceremony.
He reminisced about his experience at Milan and thanked the fans for the love and joy they provided him. Ibrahimovic expressed his gratitude to his family, teammates, coaching staff, and club officials for the opportunity they gave him. He concluded his speech by stating that he will be a lifelong fan of AC Milan.
With 988 appearances and 573 goals across all the clubs he has played for, as well as his national team, Ibrahimovic retires from football as a true legend. Despite turning 42 in October, his role as a pivotal figure in the Milan dressing room last season was impeccable. He led the team to the Serie A title, the "Scudetto," after a 13-year drought, earning the respect and admiration of his teammates and coaching staff.
He made his debut at Swedish club Malmo in 1999, from where he made the jump to Dutch club Ajax in 2001. After four seasons, he moved to Italy, playing for Juventus (2004-2006) and Inter (2006-2009) before joining Barcelona (2009-2010). He then returned to Italy for his first stint at Milan (2010-2012), although he later moved on to PSG (2012-2016), Manchester United (2016-2018), and Los Angeles Galaxy (2018-2019) before returning to the 'Rossoneri' for four consecutive seasons.
