Dybala breaks a streak and makes history in the Europa League

Paulo Dybala has made his mark in the history of the UEFA Europa League by becoming the first Argentine to score a goal in the final of this prestigious competition since it acquired its current name. This feat had not been seen since 1999 when Hernán Crespo scored in the final of the then-called UEFA Cup.

In the thrilling final held in Budapest, the Cordoba star, known as "La Joya," put Roma ahead against Sevilla with a stunning goal. His outstanding performance not only propelled his team but also made history for Argentine football in this high-level competition.

Before the competition was renamed UEFA Europa League in the 2009-2010 season, other Argentine footballers such as Jorge Valdano, Diego Maradona, Javier Zanetti, and Hernán Crespo left their mark in the then-called UEFA Cup.

Valdano became the only Argentine player to score goals in two finals, securing victories with Real Madrid in 1985 and 1986 against Videoton and Cologne, respectively. Maradona also made his mark by opening the scoring for Napoli from a penalty in the first leg final against Stuttgart in 1989.

Messi was the last to score in a final

Dybala's goal in the UEFA Europa League final adds to the list of memorable moments led by Argentine players in this competition. Since 2011 when Messi scored a goal in the Champions League final, no other Argentine player had scored in a final in European competitions.
