This Friday Cristiano Ronaldo was present at the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony in Dubai. There, he lost the most important award for the most outstanding player of 2023, but received two trophies: the Maradona award, for the best scorer of the last year, and also for the fans' favorite player.

Once on stage, he gave a thank you speech in which he praised other players such as Erling Haaland, while highlighting the level of the Saudi Pro League: "I feel so happy at Al Nassr, it's a great move. Saudi is in a process, it will take long... but step by step they will go to the top level. I think the Saudi Pro League will be among top three leagues in the world. People in Saudi will be proud. He then made an unexpected comparison: "The Saudi league is not worse than Ligue 1. The Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1, I can say that after one year spent there. We are better than the French league already now."

These words were obviously not well received in France and Ligue 1 did not take time to reply to him. On the official social media accounts they have in different languages, they shared images and phrases that, indirectly, are a response to CR7.

In the Spanish account, they posted a phrase from Lionel Messi in an interview with France Football: "It's a much more physical championship than La Liga. The teams seem more physical and the matches are tough, they leave you very little space. The players are very strong", accompanied by the message: "On Ligue 1, the opinion of the best player of all time". While the English account simply shared a photo of Leo in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt.

Cristiano won't like that

Beyond Messi's quoted words, Ligue 1's main goal was to highlight the Argentine forward as the best player of all time as a way to downplay Cristiano Ronaldo. Leo and CR7 have competed for the last 15 years for the throne of world soccer, hence the comparison between the two.
