They're crazy, Chelsea spent more than $30 million on a player to be a substitute

The English side have no limits when it comes to money.

The English side have no limits when it comes to money.

Chelsea are one of the clubs that have spent the most money this summer. Todd Boehly, their owner, has no problem investing impressive figures in order to improve the team. Clearly that alone is not enough, as last season he did exactly the same and the Blues finished 12th in the Premier League.

Now, with Mauricio Pochettino as manager, the goal is to rebuild the squad and return to being one of the best in Europe. To that end, they have spent more than $200 million on the signings of defender Axel Disasi, midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, winger Angelo and strikers Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.

And in the last few hours they added another purchase: Robert Sanchez. The Spanish goalkeeper played the last seasons at Brighton & Hove Albion and his good level caught the attention of Pochettino, who requested him for this year. The Blues paid £25 million ($31.87 million) for him.

What is striking about Sanchez's arrival is that Chelsea already have a top-level goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga. Spanish, like Sanchez, arrived at the English side in 2018 from Athletic Bilbao in exchange for $80 million, being the most expensive goalkeeper of all time and one of the most important signings in Chelsea's history. However, his level was not as expected and he lost the position to Edouard Mendy, who this summer left for Saudi Arabia.

Not satisfied yet

Blues do not have enough with the more than $200 million they have spent in this transfer window. Mauricio Pochettino believes they are still short of another midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez, with Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kanté and Ruben Loftus-Cheek having left. The target is Moisés Caicedo, for whom they are willing to pay more than €100 million.
