Juventus had a very difficult 2022/23 season. In the Champions League they could not even get past the initial phase, finished third in their group and had to play in the UEFA Europa League, where they were also unsuccessful. In Serie A they were the third best team, far behind champions Napoli. It also suffered a 10-point deduction for having increased the market value of its players in order to obtain higher income from their transfers.
All this led to the departure of several important players from the squad, such as Angel Di María, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado and Leandro Paredes. So far they have added 4 new signings: midfielder Manuel Locatelli, for whom they paid $30 million to Sassuolo, winger Timothy Weah, who cost $11 million to buy, striker Moise Kean, who cost $30 million, and forward Arkadiusz Milik from Marseille.
But this is not considered enough, so the Turin team will be looking to add a star striker: Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian player excelled at Inter last season, but now he must return to his parent club Chelsea. There, coach Mauricio Pochettino must decide if he will keep him in his team or if the best thing to do is to transfer him to another side.
Inter offered more than $25 million to get him back, but the Blues rejected it. And with Juventus' interest, they are now asking for almost $50 million. This has infuriated the Italian club's chiefs, who believe Chelsea are asking for too much money. The striker is also being targeted by Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia.
Lukaku arrived at Chelsea in 2021 after shining at Inter, where he was Serie A champion forming a great attacking duo with Argentine Lautaro Martinez. The London club paid almost $100 million for him, but he never lived up to expectations. Now they are looking to recover at least part of that investment.
