Manchester United know they have a lot at stake this Monday. The poor performances and disappointing results they have obtained this season have left them in a difficult situation: they are already eliminated in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, while in the Premier League they are far behind leaders Liverpool and so far out of the qualification zone for international tournaments.
Therefore, their only chance of winning a title is the FA Cup. But there they have no margin for error, any slightest detail can leave them eliminated and further complicate their situation. With this scenario, they are facing Wigan Athletic, a team from England's third division, in the round of 64 of the tournament.
During the first half The Red Devils proved to be better than their rivals, dominated the ball and created many opportunities to score. The opener came after 22 minutes, when Marcus Rashford received the ball inside the box and, being blocked by the rival defenders, gave a pass back to Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese defender was calm enough to analyze what to do and opted for a soft shot with his right foot that was impossible for goalkeeper Sam Tickle to save.
With the lead, Erik Ten Hag's team improved their performance even more and had many opportunities to double the lead. However, there the forwards failed. Rasmus Hojlund had two very clear chances, a header that crashed against the crossbar and a rebound that he caught inside the area and could not direct to the goal. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho also had shots that hit the post.
Unlike other games, Ten Hag must be satisfied with the team's performance. But he must also be concerned about the lack of accuracy in attack, so he may make changes after the break. The substitutes are Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Bennett, Kambwala, Forson, Hannibal Mejbri, Facundo Pellistri, Shoretire and Hugill.
