They sent spies.

Jurgen Klopp announced a few weeks ago that he will step down as Liverpool manager after the end of the 2023/24 season. That means he will put an end to a successful period of almost a decade, in which he turned the English side into one of the best in Europe, with a title and two other Champions League finals, for example. Moreover, during all those years he was a tough rival for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, considered by many as one of the best teams in the history of the Premier League.

Klopp aims to bid farewell to Liverpool in the best possible way. In fact, they are the only English club that are still competing in all four tournaments of the season. In just two weeks they will face Chelsea in the final of the Carabao Cup, while they will also play Southampton in the round of 16 of the FA Cup. They are also top of the Premier League table and qualified for the Champions League round of 16.

But the club's chiefs are already working to find a suitable replacement. That is why, according to the Mirror, they sent 'spies' to Germany to take a closer look at the coach they consider the most qualified to take over the responsibility of leading the team from next season: Xabi Alonso. The former Spanish midfielder was a Liverpool player between 2004 and 2009 and currently manages the surprising Bayer Leverkusen.

The English 'spies' chose a perfect occasion to watch Xabi Alonso's team. Last weekend they achieved a key victory in the Bundesliga 3-0 against Bayern Munich, which allowed them to gain a considerable advantage in the standings. They are now leaders with 55 points, while the Bavarian side have 50.

There are other options

Beyond Liverpool's interest, so far Bayer Leverkusen chiefs are confident that Xabi Alonso will stay there next season. That is why the Reds are considering other options, such as Zinedine Zidane, Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi and Unai Emery.
