Kevin De Bruyne and Chris Sutton

Former Football player now Pundit Chris Sutton holds the firm belief that Kevin De Bruyne stands among the top three midfielders to have graced the Premier League, though he stops short of declaring him the absolute best. The Belgian maestro marked his much-anticipated return from a five-month injury hiatus in spectacular fashion over the weekend. His performance against Newcastle, which included a crucial equalizer and a decisive assist in Manchester City's 3-2 triumph at St. James' Park, earned him accolades from both fans and pundits.

Pep Guardiola, City's manager, heaped praise on the 32-year-old playmaker, deeming him a "special player" and a "legend." Guardiola emphasized De Bruyne's pivotal role in City's pursuit of a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Since his arrival at the Etihad in 2015, De Bruyne has been a linchpin in City's success, securing an impressive array of silverware, including five Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, and five League Cups.

However, despite the glittering resume, Chris Sutton remains hesitant to anoint De Bruyne as the greatest midfielder in Premier League history. In Sutton's curated list of the top midfielders since the league's inception in 1992, he positions Patrick Vieira and Frank Lampard at fifth and fourth, respectively.

Where does De Bruyne Rank?

According to Sutton, Vieira's impact on the formidable Arsenal squad of his era, marked by exceptional leadership, strength, and influence, earns him the fifth spot. Lampard, with his remarkable goal-scoring record, including crucial penalties and spectacular long-range efforts, claims the fourth position as a player who excelled on the grandest stages.

Roy Keane, the indomitable former Manchester United captain, occupies the second spot in Sutton's rankings, just above De Bruyne. Notably absent from Sutton's list are Premier League stalwarts Steven Gerrard and N'Golo Kante. As the debate over the greatest midfielder rages on, the acknowledgment of De Bruyne's sublime talents places him as an elite player , though not definitively at the top, according to the discerning views of Chris Sutton.
