Pep Guardiola has been coaching for 15 years and in that time he has managed to become one of the best coaches of all time. In the summer of 2008 he was hired by Barcelona with the goal of making them the best team in Europe once again. And he not only succeeded, but also created a team that for many was the best in soccer history, with stars such as Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.
His success was not only with the Catalan side. He then went to Bayern Munich and, although he did not conquer Europe, he gave the team its own style and was champion several times in the Bundesliga. And since 2016 he has worked at Manchester City. There he has won 16 titles, including 5 Premier League titles and a Champions League, the club's first in its 129 years.
Guardiola is famous for his demands on the players. He does not allow anyone to relax and insists a lot on concentration and effort to achieve the goals they set themselves week by week. That has brought him success, but it has also caused conflicts with some players who did not conform to that work ethic.
Gaël Clichy revealed details of Pep's method in an interview with The Coaches Voice. The former French player shone in the Premier League with Arsenal between 2003 and 2011, and then transferred to Manchester City. There he stayed until 2017 and had the opportunity to meet the Spanish manager. About him he said: “I played more games with him in one season than with any other coach. I am grateful for what I learned under his direction but I would have liked it to have been more than one season.”
Clichy then spoke about Pep Guardiola's demands and explained: "If you weighed two kilos more than he considered your maximum weight, you wouldn’t train. You always hear coaches saying, ‘If you’re overweight, you don’t train.’ In the end, if it’s an important player, the rule is swept under the rug because they need that player. With Pep Guardiola, if you were two kilos above the weight you should have after all the hard work and proper nutrition in pre-season, you wouldn’t train. I’ve seen players who didn’t train for two weeks".
