This Monday Liverpool started 2024 in perfect fashion. They beat Newcastle 4-2 at Anfield Road thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, twice, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo and secured their place as sole leaders of the Premier League. Aston Villa had caught up with them on 42 points, but the Reds still had to play their game and knew it was key to win to increase their lead, especially considering that Manchester City still have a game against Brentford to play and are dangerously close in the standings.
That's why after the final whistle the players and the fans celebrated the victory a lot. And so did the coach. Jurgen Klopp usually lives every game with a lot of intensity and vehemently celebrates favorable results. This time was no exception, but something unexpected happened that forced him to stop his celebration.
He was doing his usual fist pumps to the crowd when he suddenly stopped and started looking down at the ground. For a few seconds he paced the Anfield Road pitch while a TV camera followed him, until he finally received an indication from the cameraman, walked a few steps, bent down and picked up his wedding ring.
During an interview with Bein Sports, a few minutes after the match, he explained what happened: "I am not into jewellery, but this is the one ring I can't live without. The cameraman who found it is my hero. He is my new hero for 2024. From now on if he wants to have my full face, then he can have it". This is not the first time something like this has happened to the coach, as some years ago he said: "I lost it once and needed a professional diver to find it because I was in the water. From time to time I lose a few pounds and it can fall off".
Liverpool will have matches in three different competitions in the next few days. On January 7 they will play Arsenal in the FA Cup round of 64, while three days later they will face Fulham in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup. And they will also continue to participate in the Premier League: their next match will be against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
