Undoubtedly one of the most interesting matches this week is the derby of the Spanish capital. Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are facing each other at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey. Chance in the draw for the duels meant that the two Spanish giants must play in this early stage of the tournament, just eight days after starring in an unforgettable match in the semifinals of the Super Cup.

Match of the week: the lineups for Real Madrid and Atletico in Copa del Rey

So far, both teams are fulfilling their first objective: to compete in the three tournaments of the season, i.e. La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. The latter is the most tempting and there both clubs advanced to the round of 16. In the Spanish league, Los Merengues are in a better situation, but both are among the top positions in the standings. However, in the Copa del Rey one of them will be eliminated on Thursday.

Things had started better for Real Madrid, who had several chances to score the opener. Jude Bellingham crashed a shot against the crossbar and Vinicius Junior had another chance, but Jan Oblak saved it. The hosts prioritized their defensive solidity, but in their first chance they scored through Samuel Lino, who received a floated cross from Rodrigo De Paul and, after a deflection off Antonio Rudiger, netted the opener in the 39th minute.

Time elapsed and it seemed that Atlético Madrid would go to the break winning, but in the last minute Luka Modric sent a free kick from far away, Jan Oblak tried to keep the ball but miscalculated and scored an own goal. That absurd mistake by the Slovenian goalkeeper saved Los Merengues, who had not reacted after Lino's goal.

It's a hard-fought match

Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid have been rivals for decades, but in recent years the tension between them increased, especially since the Champions League finals they played in 2014 and 2016. That was noticeable during the first stage, as there were several arguments between the players of both teams and also with the referee. In fact, Vinicius Junior was booked for talking too much.
