The scandalous conversation between the referee and the VAR to help Real Madrid

This Sunday Real Madrid got a key victory in La Liga. They needed to beat Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium to keep competing with the surprising Girona for the top of the standings. However, things did not start as they had hoped, as before the first minute they were trailing 1-0 and went into the break with a two-goal deficit.

But in the second half things changed. Los Merengues scored three goals, the last of them in the ninth minute of stoppage time, and won the game 3-2. The problem is that many of the things that happened during the second half were thanks to controversial refereeing and VAR decisions.

Real Madrid's first goal was scored by Jude Bellingham with a penalty that the VAR indicated to Francisco José Hernández Maeso for a handball inside the box. Moments later, Almeria scored the third goal, but again the VAR advised the referee to change his decision and rule it out for an alleged foul against Bellingham.

And the most controversial situation came later: after 22 minutes, Vinicius Junior scored the leveller with a goal in which the ball bounced off his arm. Initially Francisco José Hernández Maeso's decision was to rule it out, but again the VAR intervened to change his mind.

What happened?

This Monday the Spanish Football Federation released the recordings of the conversations between the referee and the VAR. There, Alejandro Hernandez Hernadez, the official in charge of the VAR, tells him: "I recommend an on-field review so that you can evaluate the no hand, the possible no hand. Fran, I'm going to show you, OK? It hits him in the right shoulder". He then shows Hernandez Maeso some replays in which it appears that the goal is valid, but omits others in which it is seen how the ball hits Vinicius' arm and, therefore, the goal should have been disallowed.
