The record Lionel Messi will try to break with Inter Miami this MLS season

The Argentine forward will start his second year in the U.S. league.

Leo wants to do it.

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in July 2023, after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired. This was a historic moment for soccer in the United States, as the world's best player returned to a club in the country after 50 years, when Pelé was signed by the New York Cosmos.

And Leo lived up to expectations. With the help of coach Gerardo Martino and stars like Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, in just one month he completely transformed the Herons from the worst team in the Eastern Conference to the Leagues Cup champions. However, that success could not be repeated in Major League Soccer, where David Beckham's side failed to even make the playoffs.

One of the reasons for that failure was the muscle injury Messi suffered in September with the Argentina national team, which prevented him from playing for almost a month. As a result, he has just six league appearances and one goal to his name. Now one of the goals for 2024 is to improve his performance in MLS and break a new record.

Several Argentine players have excelled in recent years in the United States. Most of them are attacking midfielders or forwards with impressive statistics and Leo will target them. Gonzalo Higuain scored 29 goals in 68 games at Inter Miami, giving an average of 0.42. And other stars achieved similar or even better numbers, such as Montreal Impact's Ignacio Piatti (0.49), New York City FC's Valentin Castellanos (0.45), New England Revolution's Gustavo Bou (4.0) and Austin FC's Sebastian Driussi (0.5).

He can do it

While for now Lionel Messi's goals per game average in Major League Soccer is very low (just 0.16), he is talented enough to improve. In fact, during his career he has much better stats than that: with Barcelona he scored 672 goals in 778 games (0.86) and with the Argentine National Team he has netted 106 goals in 180 games (0.58).
