They both won awards.

Cristiano Ronaldo has often been criticized for certain attitudes on and off the field. He has never been shy to admit that he considers himself the best player in the world and at every opportunity he has he highlights the things he has achieved throughout his 21-year professional career. And he deserves it. No other player in the history of soccer has scored as many goals as he has, in addition to being the top scorer in the history of the Champions League and having won that title five times with two different clubs.

At the age of 39, he continues to demonstrate all his quality and talent. With Al-Nassr and the Portugal National Team he performed excellently during 2023 and that allowed him to become the top scorer in the world between January and December with 54 goals, surpassing other stars much younger than him like Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane.

However, this Friday he made a huge gesture of humility during the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony in Dubai. There, the most important award of the event, for the best player in the world during the last year, was about to be presented. The finalists were CR7 and Manchester City's Haaland, and the TV cameras were focusing on both.

But Cristiano made several gestures to the cameramen who were near him, telling them not to show him but Erling, acknowledging that the Norwegian striker deserved the award. And that's what happened: Haaland received that trophy, while Ronaldo won the Maradona award for the best scorer of 2023 and the trophy for the fans' favorite player.

He got his revenge

For Erling Haaland it was undoubtedly an important moment. He had unexpectedly lost last week to Lionel Messi at FIFA's The Best awards, despite having the same score as the Argentine forward. But the votes of the skippers of every national team in the world were decisive for Leo to be number 1 for the third time in his professional career.
