Real Madrid had a mission this Saturday: beat Las Palmas and become the new leaders of the La Liga standings, at least until Girona play their match against Celta on Sunday. Los Tozudos are having a wonderful performance this season and have managed to compete so far with the giants of Spain, forcing the others to give their best to catch them.

Real Madrid player Rodrygo's blow to a rival that should have been a red card

But the challenge for Los Merengues was not easy. They were facing a team that have proven to be solid as Las Palmas. In fact, the hosts were very close to the qualification zone for international tournaments and needed a win to reach that goal. In addition, they had the support of thousands of fans who filled the Gran Canaria Stadium.

During the first half, neither team showed a good performance. The most important situation was not a chance to score, but a hit by Rodrygo Goes on goalkeeper Alvaro Valles that the referee considered deserved a yellow card and not a red card. But after the break things changed completely: after 8 minutes Sandro Ramirez sent a drilled cross that Javier Muñoz connected inside the box with a right foot shot. He was lucky that the ball took a slight deflection off Nacho and that made it impossible for goalkeeper Lunin to save it.

However, the joy was short-lived for Las Palmas: just 12 minutes later, Eduardo Camavinga assisted Vinicius Junior and the Brazilian winger netted the leveller with a strong left foot shot. And when there was very little left for the final whistle, Toni Kross sent a floated cross and Aurélien Tchouaméni completed the comeback with a beautiful header.
