Liverpool started their UEFA Europa League 2023/24 journey with an important 3-1 win in Austria against LASK. This allows them to lead Group E with 3 points, as in the other match Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Toulouse drew 1-1 in Belgium.
But it was not an easy match for the English side, as they had to work hard to overcome their opponents. LASK surprised everyone 14 minutes into the first half, when they scored the opener through Florian Flecker. The Austrian midfielder received the ball outside the box after a corner and shot powerfully with his right foot, leaving goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher with no reaction.
Liverpool were not at their best in the opening 45 minutes, but things changed after the break. In the second half, Darwin Nuñez netted the equaliser from the spot, after referee Marco Di Bello awarded a disputed penalty.
After that, coach Jürgen Klopp decided to include some of the stars on the bench, such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis MacAllister. And it quickly paid off, as after 18 minutes Ryan Gravenberch sent in a drilled cross and Luis Diaz scored the second goal. Near the end whistle Mohamed Salah, who had come on a few minutes earlier, netted the third with a great individual move inside the box.
Liverpool will quickly return to England to rest after the victory in Austria. In just 4 days they will play their next Premier League match, against West Ham United at Anfield Road, looking for a victory that will allow them to stay in the top of the table. Then, on September 27, they will face Leicester City in the round of 32 of the Carabao Cup. And 3 days later they will have a key match against Tottenham in the Premier League.
