The Carabao Cup did not get off to an ideal start for Liverpool. Coach Jurgen Klopp made the decision to rest most of the team's stars for Wednesday's tournament opener against Leicester City, surely confident that substitutes would be enough to overcome a Championship club.
However, the team's performance fell short of expectations and The Foxes capitalized on that at Anfield Road. Early in the game, after just 3 minutes, the visitors scored the opener through Kasey McAteer. The England striker received a great assist from Yunus Akgun, stepped into the box and shot gently with his left foot, preventing goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from saving.
The quick and unexpected goal was a blow to Liverpool, who were unable to react in the following minutes. But as time went on, they regained their confidence and started to control the ball and the field.
With that scenario, they had an unbeatable opportunity to score the equaliser. In the 28th minute, Konstantinos Tsimikas took a free kick near the corner and found Cody Gakpo alone inside the box, near the far post. The Dutch striker tried to score with a header that beat goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk, but was cleared off the line by defender Conor Coady.
If Liverpool don't get the equaliser in the next few minutes, Jurgen Klopp will start to lose patience and will surely think about making changes in the second half to improve the team and find a way to break Leicester City. The good news for the coach is that he has top players on the bench who can provide him with solutions. The substitutes are Adrian, Luke Chambers, Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk, Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Stefan Bajcetic, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. Mohamed Salah is not on the bench.
