(VIDEO) Julian Alvarez's brilliant performance saved Manchester City in Germany

Manchester City needed a win. Surprisingly, last week they had lost two consecutive matches, against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and vs Wolverhampton in Premier League, so this Wednesday's match against RB Leipzig in Champions League was important to put those bad performances behind them.

It was a difficult mission, as the German side had won their first match in Group G 3-1 against Young Boys in Switzerland and were, together with the Citizens, leaders of the standings.

Things started well for Pep Guardiola's team, who in the first half controlled the ball and the field and proved to be a more powerful team than their rivals. The opener came after 25 minutes, when Bernardo Silva gave a pass to Rico Lewis, who sent a drilled cross for Phil Foden, inside the box, to shoot with his right foot and beat the resistance of goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

After the break, however, things got complicated for The Citizens. Three minutes into the second half, Lois Openda received the ball near the halfway line, ran several yards to enter the box, resisted the mark of Manuel Akanji and shot when goalkeeper Ederson tried to cover his goal.

Manchester City's victory seemed difficult after Openda's equaliser. The minutes passed and the English side could not find solutions, until Guardiola decided to include Julian Alvarez to replace Phil Foden. The Argentine striker entered the field with only 12 minutes to go and was decisive. Moments after the change, he received the ball near the box and with a beautiful right foot shot to the far post netted the second. And in stoppage time he gave a great assist for the winger Jeremy Doku to score the 3-1.
