Manchester United lost 4-3 against Bayern Munich in their first match in group A of the Champions League 2023/24. The English side showed an acceptable level and at times were better than their opponents, but they made serious mistakes that prevented them from getting at least a draw.

Things had started well for The Red Devils, as in the first minutes of the match they dominated the ball and the field, and even created some dangerous situations. But everything changed after 28 minutes of the first half, when Leroy Sané received a pass near the box and shot with his left foot. The ball was directed to where André Onana was, but his reaction was not accurate and he made an absurd mistake, letting the ball escape under his body to become the opener. This was a blow from which Manchester United never fully recovered. From then on Bayern Munich improved and did well to win the match.

After the final whistle, André Onana gave an interview with TNT Sports and took responsibility for his team's defeat: "It's difficult to lose this way because, in the beginning, we started very good. After my mistake, we lost control of the game. It's a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I'm the one who let the team down. We didn't win today because of me."

The goalkeeper also added: “Today was one of my worst games and it's difficult because we have big ambition and it was a big opportunity for us to bounce back. It's tough but we have to be together and to learn from our mistakes is the only thing to do."

Not a good start

Manchester United paid nearly $60 million to Inter to sign Andre Onana. However, his performances at the start of the season have not lived up to expectations. On this, the goalkeeper was honest and said: “Of course, I have a lot to prove because to be honest my start has not been good”.
