The midfielder will arrive from Wolverhampton for a fortune.

Pep Guardiola had announced last week that he intended to add a midfielder to the squad. Ilkay Gundogan's departure to Barcelona and Kevin De Bruyne's serious injury reduced the coach's alternatives to build the team's midfield. This summer only Mateo Kovacic had arrived in that sector of the field and it was not enough.

That is why, after other alternatives such as Lucas Paqueta and Eberechi Eze were discarded, the Citizens turned to Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese player had a great 2022/23 season at Wolverhampton. He arrived there last year from Sporting Lisbon and since then played 41 games and scored one goal. His good performances allowed him to reach the Portugal National Team, with which he played 2 games in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Since Manchester City's interest was known, Nunes expressed his desire to be transferred, as he considered it an unbeatable opportunity to take a step forward in his professional career. He even refused to train with Wolverhampton to put pressure on the chiefs to accept the offer. And finally this happened.

According to The Sun, the Citizens reached a verbal agreement with Wolves on Wednesday to buy Matheus for $60 million. But that won't be all, as in addition to money, the reigning Premier League champions will also loan out Tommy Doyle. The 21-year-old midfielder will play for Wolverhampton next season and there will be an optional buyout clause in his contract.

They have spent a fortune

Nunes will be Manchester City's fourth signing this summer. They had previously added Croatian centre-back Josko Gvardiol (the most expensive defender in history), midfielder Mateo Kovacic and Belgian winger Jeremy Doku. Between the 4 transfers, the English side invested almost $290 million.
