The German player had problems in his back that prevented him from playing the last few games.

One of Barcelona's main problems this season has been injuries. Several important players of the squad have had physical problems that prevented them from playing important matches. Some have already recovered and returned, such as Pedri, Frenkie De Jong, Raphinha, Jules Koundé, Robert Lewandowski and Sergi Roberto. But others have not been so lucky.

Gavi underwent surgery on his right knee for a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus and will not play again until next season. And Marc-André Ter Stegen also had to undergo surgery this week for back problems that began during the November international break, while he was with the German national team, and which prevented him from playing in Los Blaugranas' last few games.

That is why the player, the club and the national team decided that the best thing to do was to solve the problem once and for all. This week the goalkeeper underwent surgery and Barcelona released a statement this Friday, giving details of the situation.

They explained: “The first team player Marc Ter Stegen was successfully operated on for his lumbar problems. This intervention was carried out by Dr. Amélie Léglise under the supervision of the Club's Medical Services, at the Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac. He is out of action and his evolution will determine his availability”.

When will he be able to play again?

While Barcelona did not reveal a possible date for Marc-André Ter Stegen's return, reports indicate that the goal is for him to be fit for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. That match could be on February 13 or 14, or a week later, on the 20th or 21st of the same month. Until then, coach Xavi Hernández will have no choice but to rely on substitute goalkeeper Iñaki Peña.
