The French midfielder could face a long suspension for this.

In early September fans around the world were shocked by the news that Paul Pogba had tested positive in a drug test after the first match of the 2023/24 Serie A season between Juventus and Udinese. The tests showed that the player had "testosterone metabolites of non-endogenous origin", something forbidden by soccer rules in Europe.

This led to his provisional suspension pending a second test to confirm the results of the first. At the time, the player's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, said: "We are waiting for the counter-analysis and we cannot give our opinion before the results. What is certain is that he never wanted to violate any rule".

Now the results of that second test have been released and, as expected, they were again positive. Pogba now has seven days to present the arguments of his defense and then the Anti-Doping Court will make a decision.

Things are not looking good for the midfielder who won the World Cup with France in 2018. The rules state that in situations like this athletes can receive sanctions of up to 2 years disqualification from competing, and up to 4 years if it is proven that the consumption of the banned substances was with the intention of gaining an undue advantage. In any case, if the suspension is upheld, Juventus could terminate his contract, which is the most onerous in Serie A. And rumors indicate that Pogba is considering retirement despite being only 30 years old.

What is his explanation?

After the news of the positive doping was first reported in September, Paul Pogba explained that the substance he consumed was a drug given to him by a "doctor friend", purchased in the United States. The player used it without notifying the Juventus medical team and therefore did not make a proper assessment of the consequences it could have.
