On Saturday Real Madrid started their way in the 2023/24 La Liga season facing Athletic Bilbao at the Nuevo San Mamés stadium. There they got a good 2-0 win that left coach Carlo Ancelotti satisfied, as they showed a good performance and were superior to their rivals throughout the match. In addition, some of the new signings, such as Jude Bellingham and Fran García, lived up to expectations.
However, not everything was positive. At the start of the second half, Eder Militao disputed the ball with an opposing striker and suffered a serious knee injury. Hours later Real Madrid announced that the Brazilian player suffered torn ligaments and will have to undergo surgery, which means he will be out of the field of play for most of the year.
This may force president Florentino Perez to look for a new player during this transfer window. There are only three center-backs left in the squad: Nacho, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba. This will not be enough for a season in which they will play La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. That's why some thought of Sergio Ramos.
The 37-year-old Spanish defender was a Real Madrid star for more than a decade, being part of the teams that won the Champions League in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2022 he arrived at Paris Saint-Germain, but after two seasons his contract ended and he is now a free agent. This summer he tried to return to Sevilla, the club from which he emerged, but could not make it. With Militao's injury, he may have the chance to return to La Casa Blanca.
Ramos has had offers from other clubs this summer. According to reports, he has turned down bids from Saudi Arabia, Boca Juniors of Argentina and Major League Soccer. Apparently, his intention is to remain in Europe to play in the Champions League again.
