Breaking news, the court decision that could change European soccer forever

For decades the most important club tournament in the world has been the Champions League. The best clubs from Europe's top leagues, such as Spain, Germany, England, Italy, France, Portugal and the Netherlands, compete in search of the title that all fans dream of celebrating one day.

However, for some time now the chiefs of some of the top teams in those countries have been working on a project to radically change international club tournaments in Europe. They want to create the Super League, a competition that would bring together the best sides from each country, just like the Champions League, but with a different format and more money.

In 2021 the first attempt was made to create this new tournament, but instantly the majority of fans and governments opposed it, while UEFA and FIFA threatened the clubs involved with harsh sanctions. This ended up in the courts, while the project was stalled for two years.

But this week the European Court of Justice released its decision and shocked the world: "The rules of FIFA and UEFA, which make any project for a new club soccer competition, such as the Super League, subject to their prior authorization and which prohibit clubs and players from participating in it, on pain of sanctions, are unlawful". The Court found the actions of FIFA and UEFA to be contrary to competition law and an abuse of power.

What would the Super League look like?

This court decision will allow the project to be reconsidered. If it becomes a reality, the Super League will have three divisions (Star, Gold and Blue). The latter with 32 teams, the other two with 16. In each season there will be relegations and promotions, while performances in the leagues of each country will be taken into account to access the competition. In addition, there will be two phases: in the first, there will be groups of 8 teams that will play against each other and then advance to a playoff round.
