They already have another option for the midfield

Barcelona has expanded its list of targets for the summer transfer market with the inclusion of Villarreal midfielder Álex Baena. While the club awaits Ilkay Gündogan's final decision, considered one of their priorities, the potential deal is at risk due to interest from Arab football and Manchester City, despite a verbal agreement reached between the parties a few months ago.

According to reports from ESPN and Relevo, the Spanish player from Villarreal is being considered as an alternative in case Gündogan chooses other options. There is even mention of Barcelona not ruling out signing both players if they can generate the necessary financial resources to carry out both operations.

Xavi has expressed his desire to strengthen the midfield with players who can make a difference near the opponent's area, especially after a season in which the team has struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities, particularly in games when Pedri was absent.

Following the confirmation of Leo Messi's departure to Inter Miami, Xavi stated that Barcelona needs a midfielder who can provide both assists and goals, in addition to reinforcing the defensive midfield position. In this context, Álex Baena, who scored 12 goals and provided six assists with Villarreal this season, has entered the radar of the Blaugrana club.

However, as with most options at present, the signing of the young Spanish player is complicated due to Barcelona's imposed rule that limits their spending to 40% of what they save or generate. Furthermore, Baena's recent contract extension with Villarreal until 2028 further complicates his potential transfer to the Catalan team.
