The Citizens won the UEFA Super Cup, but the celebrations were not so good.

Manchester City got the first title of the 2023/24 season. After winning the Treble (Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup), they now had the chance to continue the celebrations. A little more than a week ago they had missed the chance, when they lost the Community Shield on penalties against Arsenal.

But now things were different. As champions of the last Champions League, they won the right to play the UEFA Super Cup against the champions of the UEFA Europa League, Sevilla, in Greece. There, they started losing because of Youssef En-Nesyri's goal, but Cole Palmer scored the equaliser and on penalties The Citizens won the game.

However, the celebrations were not as good as in Istanbul, when they won the Champions League. Only 3 days later, on Saturday, August 19, they had to play the second Premier League match against Newcastle at Etihad Stadium. This forced Pep Guardiola to make decisions that the players surely didn't like.

At the post-match press conference, the Spanish coach said: “Tomorrow we'll be even happier than today. Recovered, not one drop of alcohol today. Recover as much as possible because again from Greece, thank you so much to the Premier League to let us play on Saturday not on Sunday or Monday. Thank you so much”. Thus Guardiola showed his anger at the decision of the English league, which did not allow them to have more days off.

They accepted the decision

The ban on drinking alcohol in the middle of the celebrations was surely regretted by the Manchester City players. However, they heeded their manager's advice. Jack Grealish was asked about this and replied: “Nah put a ban on that. We'll go home tonight, eat some nice food and chill. Straight recovery and then back to the Premier League.”
