This Sunday Barcelona and Atlético Madrid played one of the most important matches of the weekend in Europe. Both teams needed a victory to get closer to the leaders of the La Liga standings, Real Madrid and Girona, and they also knew that a defeat would leave them almost out of the title race.
Against this backdrop, Los Blaugranas showed they knew how to handle the pressure better, as they were far superior to their opponents, controlled the ball for most of the time and created several opportunities to score in the opponent's box.
The only goal of the night at the Olympic Stadium Lluis Companys in Montjuic was netted by Joao Felix 28 minutes into the first half, when he received an assist from Raphinha, entered the box and shot softly over goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who could do nothing to save it. Before the match, there had been speculation as to whether the Portuguese forward should celebrate if he scored against his former club. In the end he did, although he was quite respectful and measured.
However, this certainly did not please Atlético Madrid. They are Joao Felix's parent club. In fact, he has a contract there until June 30, 2029 and, once his loan with Barcelona expires at the end of this season, he will have to return. This is not the wish of the player, who more than once has assured that he feels at ease on the Catalan side.
Atlético Madrid may find a way to take revenge against Joao Felix. According to Marca, they valued him at almost $80 million for him. This means that if Barcelona want to keep him, they will have to pay a fortune, something impossible for them considering the serious financial problems they have. The other alternative is to negotiate a new loan, although for that they will need the predisposition of Atlético Madrid.
