The French striker did not perform well at Catalunya, but that's behind him now.

Antoine Griezmann's departure from Atletico Madrid in 2019 to join Barcelona caused a scandal in Spain. The French player had already been close to being transferred in previous years, but had finally decided to stay with Los Colchoneros as he was considered a star of the team and a key player for coach Diego Simeone.

When his mind changed and he agreed to be transferred to Barcelona to partner Lionel Messi, Atlético Madrid fans were disappointed and said so at every opportunity. However, after two seasons in which his performances were far from expectations, the forward left the Catalan side and returned to the team from the Spanish capital.

There he gradually recovered his best level and once again became one of the best players in La Liga, while regaining his place of prominence in the France national team, with which he reached the final of the Qatar 2022 World Cup against Argentina. He now has a clear objective for the 2023/24 season: to become the top scorer in the history of Atlético Madrid.

So far he has scored 157 goals in 341 games with Los Colchoneros. This places him in fourth place in the club's all-time scoring charts. Above him are Fernando Torres, with 129 goals, Paco Campos, with 158 goals, and Luis Aragonés with 172 goals.

Can he do it this season?

Antoine Griezmann is just 16 goals short of overtaking Luis Aragonés to become the top scorer in Atlético Madrid's history. That is exactly the amount of goals he scored during the 2022/23 season, so he has a good chance of achieving the goal this year.
