The Premier League is for many the best league in the world, because in addition to the fact that many of the best players play in it, it is also one in which there is no clear dominator, but there are five or six teams that can really aspire to win the title, unlike what happens in other top leagues in Europe. There was another big surprise in English soccer today, as Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Tottenham, 4 goals to 2.
The team from the Seagulls overcame Spurs and achieved a result that undoubtedly very few expected, since on the one hand Brighton was coming from a three-game winless streak in the Premier League and, on the other hand, Tottenham had three consecutive victories, so at least on paper, the Londoners were the clear favorites. However, soccer, and English soccer in particular, is often full of surprises.
With a brace from Joao Pedro and goals from Jack Hinshelwood and Pervis Estupiñán, Brighton took the three points and the victory in front of their fans at the Falmer Stadium. But, in addition to the win, the home side managed to do something they had never done before when facing Spurs. For the first time in the club's history, they were able to score four goals against the Londoners, meaning that for the first time since 1977, the Seagulls managed to do so much damage in a single match to this rival.
For Spurs, this defeat weighs heavily as they had the chance to overtake Manchester City in the standings, but the loss leaves them with 36 points and in fifth place in the Premier League. Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to eighth place in the championship and overtook Newcastle on Matchday 19 of the tournament.
Tottenham will face Bournemouth to bid farewell to the year, as that match will be on December 31. Less than a week later they will play the Third Round of the FA Cup against Burnley and later, in the middle of the month, they will face Erik ten Hag's Manchester United.
