Surprise at Anfield Road: Liverpool were beating Burnley, but something happened

The Reds need to win to overtake Manchester City in the standings.

Liverpool need a win.

After Manchester City's 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, the pressure is on Liverpool. They know they can't slip up if they want to stay on top of the Premier League standings, as the Citizens overtook them by one point. In addition, they must recover from the blow of last weekend's defeat against Arsenal, another of the competitors for the title.

Aiming to go top of the table again, Liverpool face Burnley with this XI

Jurgen Klopp's side have an ideal opportunity, as they are facing one of the Premier League's weakest clubs, Burnley, at Anfield Road. The Clarets are in 19th place in the tournament with 13 points, as they could barely win 3 games in the season. That's why they are in relegation zone and their chances to be saved are getting smaller and smaller.

Still, things are not going easy for The Reds this Saturday. During the first minutes, the visitors defended well and managed to neutralize the virtues of the rival attackers. But that changed after a mistake by James Trafford: 31 minutes into the first half, a corner kick came in from the right that the goalkeeper tried to punch away, but his calculation was inaccurate and the ball went past him, allowing Diogo Jota to score the opener with a header.

This changed Burnley coach Vincent Kompany's plan, as from that moment on the team was forced to change strategy and take risks. That seemed to be beneficial for Liverpool, who could find more space in attack to take advantage of the speed and talent of their players, such as Jota, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. But none of that happened: the visitors scored the leveller before the break, with a beautiful header by Dara OShea.

Coach has an advantage

Klopp will surely keep most of the stars on the pitch for the second half, at least until they get the lead on the scoreboard again. This is possible since Liverpool will have no matches this week in international tournaments, considering that in the UEFA Europa League they are directly qualified to the round of 16 which will not start for a few weeks. This is an advantage compared to Manchester City, who will play the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Copenhagen on Tuesday.
