Ake did it.

Manchester City started this season 2023/24 with a huge goal: to repeat their success of last year and win again the Treble, i.e. the three most important tournaments (FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League). So far they were on the right track, very close to leaders Liverpool in the English league standings and qualified for the round of 16 of the European tournament.

But this Friday they had a difficult challenge in the FA Cup. After easily beating Huddersfield 5-0 in the round of 64, they now faced Tottenham, one of the Premier League's best teams, in London. For the first time, the Citizens were facing the possibility of missing out on one of the three tournaments they want to win this year.

And things were as difficult as expected. Although they controlled the ball for most of the match and prevented their opponents from attacking them, the minutes passed without them being able to make the difference. In the first half there were almost no remarkable situations, but after the break Guardiola's changes improved the team and they created several chances. However, the lack of precision of the forwards and the good saves of the goalkeeper Vicario were a nightmare for them.

But with only five minutes left on the whistle, Kevin De Bruyne took a corner kick, Ruben Dias made it difficult for Vicario to react and Nathan Ake was able to receive the ball and score the opener. This goal was decisive, considering that there was very little time left, and Spurs could not even create a chance to score the leveller.

It was a historic goal

In April 2019 Tottenham Stadium was opened and since then Manchester City had played six games there. In none of them had they been able to score goals, until this Friday when Ake did it and grabbed the winner for the Citizens. In addition, this allowed them to advance to the next stage of the FA Cup.
