Things have not gone as expected for Manchester United this season. Barely halfway through and they are already eliminated in two of the four tournaments in which they compete. In the Carabao Cup they were swept aside by Newcastle in the round of 16 and will not be able to defend the title they won in 2023. And in the Champions League they finished last in Group A, which prevented them not only from reaching the round of 16, but also from reaching the UEFA Europa League.
These failures have caused harsh criticism of the players and coach. The press and fans believe that the team's stars have not lived up to expectations, especially players who arrived this season for big money, such as André Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund. And the manager has been criticized for his strategic decisions, choice of players and management of relations with the squad.
With this scenario, this Monday The Red Devils will make their FA Cup debut. For the round of 64, they will face Wigan at the DW Stadium. And as usual, Erik Ten Hag gave a pre-match press conference in which he answered questions from journalists.
When asked about the arrival of new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who will be in charge of soccer-related decisions, he said: "From my talks I had a fantastic feeling after it. The personalities, their ideas, the process they want to go in, I am very positive about it. And I am sure it will be beneficial for Manchester United."
The Dutch manager was then asked if he now feels more pressure to win a title this season to keep his job, and he replied: "That is not up to me," although he also added: "We have now two leagues to play for, the Premier League and the FA Cup. We still have a lot to play for". From his words it can be interpreted that he still has hopes of winning the Premier League, although The Red Devils are 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.
