One of Xavi Hernandez's main concerns is the lack of midfielders in the Barcelona squad. The coach had asked the chiefs to bring in a player in that sector of the field during the summer transfer window, but financial problems made it impossible to fulfill this wish. Things took a turn for the worse in November when Gavi suffered a serious knee injury and underwent surgery, which will prevent him from playing for the rest of the season.
With this scenario, the arrival of a holding midfielder became even more necessary and, although alternatives such as Real Betis' Guido Rodriguez and Girona's Aleix Garcia were mentioned, negotiations have not been successful so far.
There was one player that Xavi was even more interested in for his quality and experience, and who could arrive for not too high a price as his contract is close to expiring: Joshua Kimmich. The German midfielder will become a free agent in July 2025 and his renewal with Bayern Munich does not seem likely right now. That is why Los Blaugranas had hoped to persuade him to join the team in the next transfer window.
However, his future is closer to France. According to Sky Sports, Paris Saint-Germain are the closest to signing him. Unlike Barcelona, they have enough money to negotiate with Bayern Munich for a transfer next summer and that could be decisive. But publicly the parties have not announced anything and, in fact, Nasser Al-Khelaifi assured this week that Kimmich "is a Bayern player and has a contract. We respect Bayern".
For now Kimmich has several alternatives. He can accept to go to PSG next summer, in a transfer that would leave money to Bayer Munich, or stay one more year in Germany until he becomes a free agent and negotiate with any club. The third option for now is the most unlikely: agree to renew his contract with the Bavarian side and stay for a long time there.
