The Spanish national team is one of the favorites of the EUROS this summer after winning all three of their matches in the group stages. Spain will now go up against Georgia later today in the Round of 16 as Germany awaits them in the quarterfinals. Spain will have to overcome Georgia first, who was playing their first-ever major tournament and defeated Portugal in their last game. The issue with the match against Georgia for Spain is that the federation could face a fine of up to $30,000 if the national team plays FC Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal in a potential extra time. The knockout stages will need a winner, and after 90 minutes, the game going into extra time would mean that Yamal will not be able to play due to a rule in Germany prohibiting people younger than 18 from working past 23:00. The match between Spain and Georgia begins at 21:00 Gemrany time and after 90 minutes played, it would end before 23:00. If it goes to extra time and perhaps penalties, it would be a big issue for Yamal to play then.
The head coach of the Spanish national team, Luis de la Fuente, was asked about this situation with Lamine Yamal, which could cost the national team a lot of money for playing the FC Barcelona youngster during extra time or even penalties. Luis de la Fuente said, "We’re all responsible for Lamine's wellbeing. We’re going to do our job and let him play. Nothing more. I don’t know the German legislation. Does Lamine have to be removed by 23:00? I don’t think so."
Despite these comments from the manager that he will still play Yamal during the deceiving moments of the game, FC Barcelona feels a bit relieved that a fine could happen if they play Yamal over the 90-minute mark. Mundo Deportivo reports that Lamine Yamal has played 60 games this season, 50 with Barça and 10 with Spain. FC Barcelona fans do not want to see the youngster play too many games, which would hinder his development and risk an injury. Pedri played a similar amount of games in 2021 when he played many games for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team at the EUROS. He also played in the Summer Olympics that year, which is something Yamal will not participate in this summer.
Yamal played a total of 50 matches for FC Barcelona this past season across all competitions. He scored a total of seven goals and provided ten assists across all competitions, which include La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Copa Del Rey. He played nearly 3,000 minutes for Barcelona. In La Liga, he scored five goals and provided eight assists in 37 matches played.
