Cristiano Ronaldo's missed penalty was a shocking moment at the EUROS so far. Ronaldo really wanted to score in this year's competition, and he had the chance to do it in extra time. In the 104th minute, Ronaldo's penalty was saved by Slovenia keeper Jan Oblak. The score was 0-0, and the goal would've given Portugal the win to avoid a penalty shootout, which is a very risky way to win a match. Ronaldo and Portugal ultimately won the match and advanced to the quarterfinals. Fans were concerned for Ronaldo since he was very upset about the missed penalty, but a fun fact in regards to the missed penalty made fans and Ronaldo hopefully ahead for the rest of the tournament this summer in EURO 2024. The last time Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty at the EUROs, Portugal won the tournament. In the 2016 EUROS, Ronaldo missed a penalty against Austria in the 0-0 match in the group stage. His penalty was not saved, but rather, the ball hit the post.

Ronaldo and Portugal did not win a single game in the group stage of EURO 2016, as they drew all of their matches. Portugal finished third in Group F in 2016 after draws with Austria, Hungary, and Iceland. They drew 1-1 against Iceland, drew 0-0 against Austria, and drew 3-3 against Hungary. Portugal placed third in the group but advanced to the next round because they were one of the best third-place teams in the tournament.

In the Round of 16, Portugal defeated Croatia 1-0 in extra time after a late goal by Quaresma. In the quarterfinals, Portugal drew 1-1 against Poland but won 5-3 on penalties to advance to the semifinals. Portugal played against Wales in the semifinals, which they won 2-0 with goals from Ronaldo and Nani. In the final, they defeated France 1-0 thanks to a screamer by Eder.

Portugal's next match in the EUROS 2024

Portugal will be playing in the quarterfinals of the EUROS 2024 against France. It will be a repeat of the 2016 EURO final, which Portugal won. The teams are very different this time as France reached two FIFA World Cup finals while the Portugal squad is arguably stronger.
