Chelsea beat Crystal Palace with last-minute penalty and fans on social media disagree

The Blues needed to win and they did, but not everyone agreed with the officials' decision.

Were they helped by the referee?

In the duel between London teams, Chelsea got an important victory against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. The hosts had suffered an unexpected defeat last Sunday against Wolverhampton that had left them in a difficult situation in the Premier League: they were closer to the relegation zone than to the top of the league table.

So it was key for the Blues to get the three points against a team that have also had disappointing performances of late. And during the first half they proved superior to The Eagles, controlling the ball and creating several chances to score. The opener came after 13 minutes, when Mykhailo Mudryk received an assist from Malo Gusto and shot smoothly into the box.

However, before the end of the first half the visitors netted the equaliser through Michael Olise, who caught a floated cross, controlled the ball with his chest and shot, making it impossible for goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic to react.

After the break Chelsea were again the protagonists of the game. Coach Mauricio Pochettino made some changes to try to find solutions, and he found them in Noni Madueke. The English forward was key to the victory, as he received a foul inside the box that the VAR indicated to the referee as a possible penalty. Michael Salisbury reviewed it and agreed. At 44 minutes into the second half Madueke, from the spot, grabbed the winner.

Many disagreed

The VAR decision and the referee were wrong for some spectators. In fact, immediately after Madueke's goal, many social media users opined on this. "No way this is a penalty for Chelsea," wrote one. And another opined, "Chelsea would definitely be in the relegation zone without penalties this season." A third added: "Chelsea + Penalty. the best duo in the Premier league this season".
