Inter fans will long remember Saturday's victory over AC Milan. It is not always the case that they can celebrate a 5-1 thrashing against their historic rivals, showing a high level of play and being superior for most of the match.
The match also had a detail that made it even more important. Both teams had started the 2023/24 Serie A season with 3 wins in their first 3 games, making them leaders in the standings. So, with the win, Inter were left with the solo lead and are above everyone else now.
Things were favorable for the Nerazzurri from the start of the match, as after 5 minutes Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted the opener after a drilled cross from Dimarco. After the goal AC Milan tried to recover and score the equaliser, but missed the few chances they had. And in the 38th minute Marcus Thuram showed his great quality with a beautiful shot with his left foot to make the score 2-0.
In the second half Rafael Leao netted the Rossoneri's only goal and the fans were hopeful of an equaliser, but Mkhitaryan quickly scored Inter's third goal. Hakan Calhanoglu, from the spot, netted the fourth and in stoppage time Davide Frattesi scored the 5-1, closing a dream match for Simone Inzaghi's team.
Inter are now the sole leaders of the Serie A standings with 12 points, two more than Juventus. But they know they can't relax because now they will have a very important challenge: next Wednesday they will make their debut in the Champions League 2023/24. They will have to travel to Spain to face Real Sociedad, their first opponents in Group D, which they share with Benfica and Salzburg.
