Last Thursday Real Madrid got a valuable 1-0 win against Alaves at the Mendizorroza Stadium. They did not show a great performance and had created almost no chances to score, while their job was made even more difficult by the red card to Nacho. The Spanish defender gave a hard kick to Samu and referee Isidro Diaz de Mera Escuderos booked him, but the VAR advised him to review the situation and, after watching some replays, changed his decision and showed him the red card.
With 10 players and almost 40 minutes to go, the game became very difficult for Los Merengues. However, when it looked like they were going to finish tied 0-0, Lucas Vazquez scored with a header the only goal of the night and gave them a key victory in stoppage time.
With those three points, Real Madrid became leaders of the La Liga standings. They took advantage of Girona's 1-1 draw against Real Betis to catch them at the top of the tournament with 45 points, while taking a 7-point lead over Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. For these reasons the players celebrated the victory against Alaves a lot, although no one did it like Antonio Rudiger.
This week, images surfaced of the German defender moments after Lucas Vazquez's goal. In a video recorded from the stands, he can be seen celebrating the victory vehemently. First he hugged a Real Madrid assistant and then, while walking to the locker room, he shouted and shook his fist in front of one of the officials, showing that he was not satisfied with his performance.
Real Madrid will have a couple of weeks off now. La Liga will have no matches until 2024 and the players will be able to enjoy a short vacation. Los Merengues' next match will be on Wednesday, January 3 against Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
