Tottenham have this Thursday an ideal opportunity. They are playing the last match of the 15th Premier League matchday, so they already know the results of all their rivals, such as the victories of Arsenal and Liverpool. However, the match that benefited them the most was Aston Villa vs Manchester City, in which The Villans won 1-0. This means that, if Spurs get a win against West Ham United, they will catch the Citizens in the standings with 30 points.
But it's obviously not an easy task. The Hammers have had a decent start to the season and also need a win to get closer to the qualification zone for international tournaments. In fact, they could be just 3 points away from the Conference League, where Manchester United are for now.
However, Tottenham are doing their duty. During the first half they were far superior to their rivals, controlling the ball, pushing West Ham into their own half and creating a lot of chances to score. And in one of the first of them, they got the opener.
Eleven minutes into the first half, Pedro Porro sent in a floated cross from the right corner and found Cristian Romero inside the box. The Argentine defender got rid of the man marking him, James Ward-Prowse, rose in the air and with a beautiful header scored the 1-0. From then on the hosts played very calmly and had chances to extend the lead, but lacked precision.
Cristian Romero had been unable to play for Tottenham for three games. He had received a heavy suspension after the red card against Chelsea, and the team missed him, as they did not win again either of those games. But this Thursday he proved that he is a key player and scored the first goal. This proves Lionel Messi, his teammate in the Argentina national team, who recently voted him the best defender in the world, right.
