Manchester City and Tottenham are the protagonists of one of the most interesting matches of the weekend in Europe. Both teams are aiming to compete for the Premier League title and have started the 2023/24 season well. In fact, The Citizens are in second place in the standings and Spurs can catch them if they can get a win this Sunday at Etihad Stadium.
The hosts have an advantage: not only are they playing at home, but they are facing a team that has suffered a lot of losses in recent weeks. Coach Ange Postecoglou had to find alternatives to replace important players such as Cristian Romero, suspended for his red card vs Chelsea, and the injured Micky Van De Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison.
Against this backdrop, the visitors caused a surprise at the start of the match. Seven minutes into the first half, Heung-Min Son received a long pass from Dejan Kulusevski, beat Manuel Akanji, entered the box and shot with his right foot, making it impossible for goalkeeper Ederson to react.
However, the joy was short-lived for Spurs, as just a minute later Julian Alvarez sent in a floated cross that none of his teammates were able to connect with, but Son took the ball and scored an own goal. And that was not all: on 30 minutes Bernardo Silva assisted Phil Foden and the English midfielder completed the comeback.
When the match was tied 1-1, Erling Haaland had an ideal opportunity to score Manchester City's second goal: Julian Alvarez recovered the ball near the box and assisted the Norwegian striker, who only had to push it to celebrate his 15th goal in the tournament. But he unexpectedly lacked accuracy and shot wide.
