Manchester United needed a win like the one on Tuesday against Crystal Palace. After several weeks in which they had been in the news for conflicts, injuries and defeats, and not for their performances, at Old Trafford they beat The Eagles 3-0 in the Carabao Cup debut and easily got through the round of 32.
Things worked to perfection for Erik Ten Hag. The coach decided to rest some of the squad's most important players, such as Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. And he gave the opportunity to others who recovered from some injuries, such as Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount.
In the first half, the Red Devils proved to be better than their opponents and quickly scored the opener thanks to a good pass from Diogo Dallot to Alejandro Garnacho, who inside the box shot with his right foot. Moments later Mount sent a good cross to Casemiro, who netted the 2-0 with a header.
And at the start of the second half Anthony Martial scored the third goal. After 9 minutes, Casemiro received the ball outside the box, lifted his head and saw the French striker; he sent a precise cross and he only needed to deflect the ball with his left foot to beat the resistance of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The three-goal advantage was too much for Crystal Palace, who were unable to react and were eliminated from the tournament.
Manchester United have had problems with several of the squad's forwards of late. This summer Mason Greenwood was loaned to Getafe; Antony was given a leave of absence while police in Brazil and England investigate allegations of domestic violence against him by several women; and Jadon Sancho was excluded from the squad by decision of the chiefs after his quarrel with Ten Hag. In that context, it's great news that Anthony Martial scored a goal. The Red Devils will need him.
