The Spanish side suffered injuries to Eder Militao and David Alaba and need a replacement.

Real Madrid are having a great performance in the 2023/24 season. They were one of the two teams, along with Manchester City, that won all the matches they played in the Champions League group stage. That is why they qualified as group leaders and will face RB Leipzig in the round of 16. Meanwhile, in La Liga they are only two points behind leaders Girona.

But not everything has gone well for them. The big problem Los Merengues have had is injuries. The week before the start of the season goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered torn cruciate ligaments in his left knee and just three days later Eder Militao suffered the exact same thing in the match vs Athletic Bilbao. In addition, Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Vinicius Junior also had serious problems that kept them off the field for months.

And last week David Alaba joined that list. The Austrian defender had to be replaced in the first half of the game against Valencia and then medical examinations confirmed the worst news: he too ruptured cruciate ligaments in his knee. This means he will undergo surgery and will not play for at least six months, leaving only Antonio Rudiger and Nacho as centre-backs.

That is why coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged in the last press conference that they will analyze options during the next transfer window and it is likely that they will sign a player in that sector of the field.

What are the alternatives?

According to AS, there are three favorites. One is Goncalo Inacio, a Sporting Lisbon defender who at only 22 years of age has earned a place in the Portuguese national team. Another player from that country is the second option: Antonio Silva, from Benfica, who is 20 years old. And the third is Giorgio Scalvini, one of the stars of Atalanta, in Serie A.
