The former Barcelona defender said something that Los Merengues didn't like.

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona is very old. However, in the last decades it became stronger than ever. The Catalan side grew up a lot and started to compete with Los Merengues and win as many titles as them, or even more, something that had never happened before.

Until 2006, Barcelona had only won the Champions League once, in 1992. And Real Madrid already had 9 European titles at that time. But from then on Los Blaugranas won the tournament 4 times, forcing their rivals to step up and do it another 5 times. This caused a strong competition between both Spanish clubs, which dominated Europe in the last decades.

One of Barcelona's stars during this golden era was Gerard Piqué. The defender was part of the squad in the last three Champions League titles, in 2009, 2011 and 2015, alongside Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández, among others. Now retired, he is often in the news for reasons that have nothing to do with soccer, such as his scandalous separation from Colombian singer Shakira.

This time he gave an interview to El Món and was very critical of Real Madrid: "It is a team that does not transmit anything, but it will be there and will reach the decisive moment of the Champions League. As always, with little they are getting through the games".

He believes they are different

Piqué then explained what, in his opinion, are the differences between Real Madrid and Barcelona: "They have won more than anyone else in Europe, but our way of being and thinking means that when we win it is remembered forever. In Europe they remember Pep (Guardiola's) Barça as the best team in recent history. The last Champions League Real Madrid won was a miracle and nobody remembers it, they were not superior in any knockout round, and for them it was just one more".
