The fortune that Barcelona lost in the match vs Porto because of this player

The Catalan side won 2-1 and secured their place in the round of 16, but not everything went right.

Barcelona needed to beat Porto on Tuesday. They had had a lot of problems during the last few weeks, as the results obtained and the performances shown had not lived up to expectations. The defeats against Real Madrid in La Liga and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League had caused harsh criticism to the players and especially to coach Xavi Hernandez.

With this scenario, the match against Porto was decisive for them. If they did not win, they could jeopardize their qualification to the next stage of the European tournament, something unacceptable for them. And things did not start well, as 30 minutes into the first half Pepe scored the opener for the Portuguese team.

Fortunately, Los Blaugranas reacted quickly and Joao Cancelo netted the equaliser just a few minutes later. And in the second half Joao Felix completed the comeback. With the victory, they secured their place in the round of 16, although they have not yet secured the group leadership and will have to wait until December 13 to do so.

However, not everything went well for them. The match against Porto cost Barcelona a fortune because of Pedri. The midfielder was part of the starting lineup and played 90 minutes. Thus, he made 100 appearances for the club, considering only those in which he was on the field for 45 minutes or more. This, which might seem a mere statistic, means bad news for them.

Now they must pay

When Barcelona bought Pedri in 2021, they agreed with Las Palmas a transfer for an amount of money to be paid on the spot: $5 million. But to this they added a series of clauses that increased his value if certain objectives were met: $4 million extra for playing more than 25 games; $5 million for playing 50 games; $2 million for reaching the Spanish National Team and $5 million extra for playing 100 games, considering only those in which he was 45 minutes or more on the field. Having fulfilled his contract on Tuesday vs. Porto, Barcelona must now pay that amount to Las Palmas.
